The Importance of Youth Sports

Youth sports are such an important part of a child’s life. There’s no other place outside the home where kids can learn and develop maturity, companionship, confidence, high self-esteem, teamwork, and many other tangible and intangible physical and mental skills.

Physical Benefits

From a physical perspective, we can clearly understand why youth sports are good for our children. Just a few of the physical benefits for children participating in youth sports include improved bone health, cardiovascular fitness, a reduced risk of cancer and diabetes, and an increased overall quality of life, among many other health benefits. This trend carries into adulthood as well, as adults who participated in youth sports during their childhoods are much more likely to be healthy and active in their adult lives.

In the U.S., youth sports can help combat the growing obesity rates in children and teenagers. According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), as of August 2023, obesity rates of children and teenagers aged 2-19 stood around 21.1%, which was an increase from 19.3% in 2017-2018. Along with a 7% severe obesity rate and a 15.1% overweight rate for the same age demographic, youth sports can go a long way in fighting this epidemic.

Psychological Benefits

Away from the visual, physical benefits, and arguably the more important unseen benefits of participation in youth sports are the psychological benefits they create for children. Playing sports, especially team sports, is associated with positive developmental factors for young people. Among these associations are lower rates of anxiety, depression, stress, substance abuse, and other risky behaviors, and higher rates of self-esteem, confidence, and cognitive performance. Team sports allow kids to learn about what it takes to be part of a team and teach them how to communicate with one another. They also create a space of belonging for the children by becoming a space for kids to develop new relationships and friendships with other kids who have the same interests. Just like with professional athletes, the bond that’s created from a team that is together, intending to win together, is very strong, and getting children getting to experience it for themselves will go a long way for their future.

Academic Benefits

Participation in youth sports has even been shown to support children in their academic lives as well. The improvement in cognitive skills for young children has been linked to improvements in children’s grades and test scores. The U.S. Department of Education also found that high school athletes are more likely than non-athletes to attend college and earn degrees, and another source supported this finding by collecting more data that showed that high school athletes were more likely to earn A’s and were more likely to graduate from a four-year college program.

Youth sports are so much more than playing a game for fun. It’s shaping future generations of adults in all fields. These programs lay the foundations for the types of people these children are going to be when they are older. They may not all turn out to be professional athletes, but playing these sports and being on different teams will teach them so many skills that will make them successful in life, not just on a field or a court. Youth sports are not just an excuse to keep your kids out of the house and busy after school. Youth sports is not only training and developing the athletes of the future, but it’s also raising and developing the future men and women of the world.
